Central CA Road Trip

earlier this month nanci had a week off before she started her new job (yay!), so the barreras decided to hit the road for a couple days! we only had 2 days free so it was a bit rushed, but we had a lot of fun!

heading north on the 101, we drove up and stayed in san luis obispo for the night. we got there late, and left early the next morning, so didnt really get to do anything there, but we have both been there tons of times. first stop was just outside san luis... morrow bay.

the main attraction in morrow bay is morrow rock. here is what it looks like from the town. yep... thats a big ass rock!

we drove up right next to it, the thing is huge... but you can actually appreciate its size more from a distance though

morrow bay is a nice little town, lots of little shops on the main street

dorns cafe is supposed to have the best clam chowder in morrow bay, so we had to try it. it also has the best view of morrow rock. we also got the corned beef hash as advised from yelp. the clam chowder did not disappoint... so creamy and a ton of clams in every bite which i did not mind at all! the corned beef hash was also really good!

aiden shared the corned beef hash with us, he seemed to be a fan as well!

2 hours further north on pch and we were in big sur. we got the idea of going here from our good friends alice and ashraf. i gotta say, we were a little disappointed only because the weather sucked, so much fog that we couldnt really see the spectacular views that big sur is known for!

IMG_9158 copy

we got to big sur too late to do as much hiking as we wanted, so we just stopped at the one hike that seems to be a must... the mcway falls hike. this hike is part of the julia pfeiffer burns state park.

this is one of the shortest and easiest hikes in big sur, but little aiden still got pretty tired

IMG_9114 copy

here is mcway creek, and in the upper left you can see mcway falls. mcway falls is an 80ft waterfall and one of two falls in the region that falls directly into the ocean

IMG_9132 copy

another attraction in big sur is the bixby creek bridge

we heard from multiple people that this restaurant called nepenthe was the best in big sur, so we stopped by to try it. again, it was supposed to have the best view of big sur, but the fog was too thick to see anything =(.

this is the look your son might give you just before he throws up all over the dinner table! after 2hrs of winding cliffside driving in the backseat he wasnt feeling so hot, poor guy!

the hamburger was highly recommended and was very good!

IMG_9165 copy

nanci got her normal go to dish, sea bass. it wasnt as good as many other places weve been, but the slaw with fresh crabmeat chunks made up for it!

coninuing up pch for another 45min, we ended up in monterey bay. of course we had to go check out the aquarium. cannery row is the street full of restaurants and shops leading to the aquarium, formerly a site where sardines were canned.

last stop in monterey was the fishermans wharf. not as exciting as fishermans wharf in sf, but i must say the clam chowder in monterey is much better.

the cool part is every restaurant gives out samples of their chowder to lure in guests. we tried so many chowders just walking around that we were almost full off of that alone! we decided to go with the one we liked best, and with the the highest yelp reviews, a place called old fishermans grotto. amazing clam chowder, and an equally amazing dungeness crab cocktail!

it was a LONG 6hr drive home, but it was a great, although short, road trip. i would definitely do it again, hopefully next time we will have better weather!
